First classes at Uc3m.

Hello blogreaders,

Monday was my first day at Carlos III. I already found out a faster way to get there what is always nice to know when you have 4 days of classes at 9 am. My first class was Strategic Management. The new professors were as good informed as we were. ( Not really good ) so he didn’t manage to get the slides on the screen. He had to wrote down everything on the blackboard. His accent is really fun, but I won’t complain , this was one of the first people who actually speaks English in Spain so that was nice. The second class we had to watch a youtube movie about Enron.( I think we could do this also at home and better he told us a bit more about Enron himself) I have to get used to this school system, we have to make a lot of assignments, case studies and so on and they want you to be in class. In Tilburg I just follow some of my courses but some of them are so much easier to be studied at home and for these subjects I never go to classes. Because there are at max 30 people in the classroom you have to participate active and you can’t just sitting in your chair, enjoy a cup of coffee and a nice slice of bread. However I don’t like homework, I do like the fact that classes are just one hour, you got case studies out from the real life what makes it more fun and you can better imagine what the subject is really about. In Tilburg I sometimes really don’t. Also the rapidity of the classes is much slower than at Tilburg.

Tuesday first I had Operations Management. I didn’t really knew what is was about because I didn’t had supply chain courses before. Than I should have had human recourse management but there came a Spanish speaking guy who apparently said that the course was cancelled so I had to wait from 10 till 15.15. It was like 33 degrees, the food in the canteen is so incredible good and cheap so it could be worse. I ate and tanned a bit and at 15.15 Jasper and I had genesis of the modern firm. He told us our possibilities, 1; make 2 essays in which you criticise an academic article with three other articles you have to find yourselves plus you make a presentation about another article plus you have to be in class at least 75% . 2; we never come to class just learn his power point sheets and 24 articles and have just an exam about this. We chose option two so now we have classes till 11.15 on Monday , 12.30 on Tuesday, 10 on Wednesday and 12.30 on Thursday. Jasper also follows this course so we divides the 24 articles and both summarise 12 of them each. In half a year this would be better than option one.
That night Boyd, our roommate, celebrate his birthday. Chen-tin bought him a gourmet as his present so we had a really nice evening. Jasper and I gave him a chocolate pie with Disneys Cars on.

Wednesday I only had one hour of classes. After this Jasper and I went to the Hypercarrefour. We thought about buying a printer for our house but after calculating a bit it will be more expensive than make your prints at the University so we didn’t and I just bought mascara and hair paint what is so cheap in Spain compare to in the Netherlands.
Then we went back to University to buy a ticket for the welcome party from ESN. This was only possible between 12 and 14 and just one ESN member was there to sell the tickets so we had to wait such a long time. After dinner we went first to the bottelon at Rey, this was so cool, like 100 people enjoyed their drinks and just talked a bit. We saw our group from the gymkhana, MTV party and picnic. With them we went also to the welcome party at Coco that night.
It was fun and cheap for a club. We paid 10€ for entrance included 2 drinks. Because you could drink what you want I took a red wodka redbull. At 03.15 we walked back home because Jasper and I had classes at 9. We fell asleep at 4 so it was so early to wake up. We both skipped the first class, waked up at 9 and took the metro at 9.15 how fast we were. The first class was organisational economics. I had to make 5 questions about the Enron movie and checked this in class. I thought it would be easier if he gave us the answers on blackboard, or how they call it Aula global. Here they have 2 office hours in which you can come to his office to ask him questions in case you have them and couldn’t asked them in class. Now we just checked 4 of the 5 question in that hour and he couldn’t explain us about the next class where we have to make questions about.

Today Jasper and I went to the Rio park again with Annemarie from Tilburg. We both already know her from Asset first. It was a nice day 35 degrees relaxed a bit at the beach and after we showed her our house, took a shower and went to the city to shop and having dinner in a tapas bar near Plaza Mayor.

After a week I know what to expect a bit from the University. I asked the Spanish people a lot because the information was a bit incomplete. Now I now we can buy copies from the books at a copy shop because even they don’t know where the bookshop is. The level is lower but we have to do so much more ! And I still love the Spanish whether and therefor the fact that I just have classes till 12.30 because after it becomes so hot in the classrooms since there is now airco in the classroom :(
