Toronto: SCHULICH & Travel & Sports & Multiculti

Hey future exchangers,

My original plan was to blog 4 times a month... The fact that this is only the 2nd time that i write a blog signals that time is a very scarce resource here. It's hard to manage a life of a schulich school of business student, travelling exchange student, and sporter. ;-D though.. Its LOTS OF FUN and i really enjoy life here. I would like to inform you shortly about how life is here by pointing out the main things i think would be valuable for you.

- SCHULICH SCHOOL OF BUSINESS.
STUDY!!!!! groupwork, case studies, assignments, a book review, groupwork, presentations, groupwork, summaries, diary entries, groupwork, readings, books, coursekits, groupwork, here you can see the schulich building!.. LESS IS MORE is a sentence which is UNKNOWN here at Schulich. You have to work hard i promiss you. I spend a lot of hours in the libraries, and its exactly the same if i look at the other exchange students. We are all pretty good students and we're used to work hard:-).
of course you always have the people who take the easy way (only 3th year marketing courses) but thats not the good attitude in my eyes. i selected courses which would improve me as both a person and future manager.
Though i have demanding courses, and sometimes i think its a bit too much, in general i really enjoy my classes and the things im doing for the uni.

- PARTY WITHIN LIMITS. if you look for an exchange with tons of parties, getting drunk everynight, don't go here. this is not the partyplace, both because Schulich is too demanding and mandatory class and because of the location. as i mentioned it takes 1 hour to get downtown, so 1,5hours to get from your home into a club. and the last subway goes back at 1.30 in the night.... We go once a week on average. We go more often to on campus drinks and activities of course, but thats not real party. On this picture you see me and Olga , my Russian roommate and friend! Though, its not vodka what we’re drinking!.

-SPORTING here is great, you can join the varsity teams if you are good at a particular sport or just play in intramurals for fun. some guys who play football in our exchange group formed a football team, and they play with their multiculti team (mainly spanish/southamerican/french) against other students from York univeristy in a competition really nice.
i play tennis sometimes, and go running regularly at the toronto track and field centre. last sunday the 16th i did the scotiabank toronto waterfront half-marathon, in 1.41.35, which was very good, but especially a great experience, to run among 22.000 others!
i still plan to go swimming and might start with salsa lessons this week. NICE.

-TRAVELLING, is GREAT here. Algonquin national park(picture at the end), Niagra falls, Montreal, Quebec, Ottawa, really close, and Chicago,Boston,New York, Philadelphia and Washington also close. you can buy cheap bustickets to all these places. for <100 dollars you can book a retour to new york, which is NICE;-). and megabus has also good offers within canada.
i went to half of the mentioned places already, and i would like to get all of them by january:)
i visited my friend in Ottawa, Lotte, 2 weeks ago, which was really nice!! i added a picture of me and her in front of the Canadian parliament in Ottawa, the capital of Canada.

-MULTICULTURAL, its really a mix here, i often think me, as one of the white people, are the minority group. There are many people from asia, chinese, japanese, indians, pakistan, and people from the middle east, a lot of jewish people as well here at Schulich, probably because the founder was a jew. i have a teacher with a Kippa, and you have days off during the jewish official holidays. which is nice:P.
You really expand your cultural mindset here. better than you can anywhere else i think. and i've learned here already that we really have to appreciate that we are born in the Netherlands, with a democratic government, free speech, good and affordable education system, human rights, a good social system, and opportunities to grow and progress everywhere. this is definitely not the case in most countries around the world.
and i discovered that the typical 'canadian' does not exist, at least, not here in Toronto. its a big mix of clusters of people, coming from all over the world who are living apart together!! this can be seen alreday on an easy map of downtown where you can find greektown, chinatown, little italy, koreatown, little portugal, little india, there are neighbourhoods for every etnicity.
i had a party some weeks ago, and there were some guys from India with the religion Sikh partying next to me.. google Sikh if you are not familiar with it:) for me it was pretty special since normally i dont see them in cafe philip or cafe polly haha.

If you can understand dutch an interested in more information, http://www.ireneintoronto.waarbenjij.nu/

the last thing i want to mention realize that life is good, both for people who are on exchange and who are studying in Tilburg.. appreciate life, and be conscious with the things you are doing. Make a special week out of every week. Because of the exchange here, i see that i have to appreciate my life at home more and more, and that i have great friends at home that i miss and love to see in january again!!!

LOVE LIFE, LIVE LIFE:)

ENJOY
